This poster describes the Ezra Prentice Homes Initiative, which began in response to the concerns about heavy truck and train traffic near Ezra Prentice Homes. To address concerns about the health effects of exposure to air pollutants, AVillage…,Inc. & the Radix Ecological Sustainability Center developed community health surveys to assess residents’ health conditions, needs, and concerns. Surveys were administered to residents, and meetings were arranged with policymakers, government agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency & the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and truck & train industries to prioritize the health & well-being of residents.

It (Almost) Never Rains On Earth Day
Although we like everything to be perfect, and try to make
everything go as according to plan, April 22nd was just another
reminder that some things are completely out of AVillage’s control. Despite the
lack of sunshine, and occasional “heavy mist,” South End
Earth Day (SEED) was another great success.

EcoJustice Summer!
This Summer, the Radix Ecological Sustainability Center along with A Village Inc., will conduct its five-week EcoJustice Summer Youth program for youth ages 14 - 18. Participants will have the opportunity to earn an income while being engaged in hands-on work and learning related to local ecological and social justice issues. Based out of the Radix Center, youth will be employed in food justice activism through the maintenance and operation of Radix’s one-acre urban farm as well as numerous gardens throughout Albany’s South End. Produce harvested from these gardens feeds local residents and supports Radix’s educational programs. Days also consist of educational opportunities, with workshops, guest speakers, and outdoor field trips to local sites. The dates for the program are from Monday July 3rd through Friday, August 4th.

Fourth Annual Celebration of Progress
It was an opportunity to rekindle old friendships and make new ones; it was a night to remember that we are more than just a group of people who share the same zip code, but a unified family; it was a chance to acknowledge and appreciate everyone’s hard work in making the South End a better place; it was a celebration of our progress.

2015 South End Earth Day
The 5th South End Earth Day took place at The Radix Ecological Sustainability Center on April 25th. It was a great event with nice sunny weather. This year AVillage partnered with the Department of Health and soilShop in running soil lead tests during the event. With help from many people, we successfully collected and tested over hundreds of soil samples. This was a very significant step for the South End neighborhood, since there had never been a definitive study of lead in the soil for the region. We might have a big impact on state policy and possible funding for improving the health of the neighborhood.
During the event, AVillage also provided a tour of vacant lots for those interested in learning more about the South End and the Albany Land Bank properties. Following the tour, our guide George, also our Farmers Market Manager, handed out a South End vacant lots map. It is our hope the participants will build a closer relationship with the community, and this will turn into future action.

Community Farewell for Chief Krokoff
AVillage represented the South End community to thank Chief Krokoff for his great initiatives in our communities.
"Chief Krokoff was really accessible to the community. Every time we wanted to meet with him, he never said no to us," said Mr. White
"We look forward to working with Brendan, oh I mean our new Police Chief. We know that we will make differences in our community moving forward. I can not state enough that you (Chief Krokoff) have given us the path to work on, a blueprint to move forward. I am excited about where we are going."
Goodbye Chief Krokoff. We know you will miss us just like we do you. AVillage will make every efforts to continue the legacy you brought to our community.
Good luck and stay "warm" in Milton, Georgia!

3rd Annual Mississippi Day Celebration
Thank you Albany for your support of our 3rd annual Mississippi Day Celebration. Your dedication and support made it all possible in-spite of the Rain. We had a great time.
I went to church this morning and ask God to give us a great day for next year, thanks to all the elected officials who came out to celebrate with us, Albany Mayor Kathy Moran Sheehan, congressman Paul Tonko, common council president Carolyn Mclaughlin, councilwoman Vivian Kornegay, family court judge Peggy Walsh, assemblyman Assemblymember John McDonald, sheriff Craig Apple, and many more. Can't for get the clergy, but most of all thank God for the blessings he bestowed upon us all!

2014 Celeration of Community Action
Join us as we celebrate four years of grass-roots community accomplishments in the South End, honor some of our friends and AVillage members, and look ahead to another challenging year.
AVillage members meet every Thursday. From those grass-roots meetings have come the
successful fight for bus service on Morton Avenue, advocacy to improve the city’s summer youth programs and address vacant buildings, among many other issues.
But AVillage members also roll up their sleeves. We’re restored vacant lots, partners on three successful South End Earth Day events, created the much-loved Mississippi Day celebration in Lincoln Park, and raised funds for community members in need.

AVillage Community Clean-up
It Really Does Take AVillage!
Just finished cleaning our community with 25 Saint Rose students. Had a great time!! After cleaning our Community, this wonderful young lady came by our work site and offered us to come by her church and have lunch. Ms. Ruth Coleman-Nelson, she fed 25 hungry students at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church on Alexander Street, where the Great! "Pastor Dixon" resides. That goes to show that it Really does takes AVillage! The Students were very appreciative.Thank you Ms. Ruth Coleman-Nelson

"Our Children's Garden" Grand Opening!! This was a fun filled day of joy and happyness, plenty of food!
